So you’re looking for writing or journalism jobs? Is the idea of writing every day as a reporter something you're interested in? I dug up these journalism and writing job links you might find useful no matter what media you want to write for.
Canadian journalism jobsJeff Gaulin and Mediajobsearch Canada tend to be the best for Canadian jobs and they aren't just for people looking to be reporters. These sites also have production and sales jobs, as well as online and new media writing jobs. Telecommuting and freelance writing jobsThis is one category that has grown in popularity, particularly as large media organizations downsize and contract out. People are also looking for flexibility in their work lives and don’t want the 80 hour a week grind that the baby boomers seemed to enjoy. I'm looking for more sites with these jobs. Technical and web writingThis category of writing can be lucrative and I’ll be adding links in these areas in the near future. My goal is to avoid sites with “volunteer” or low paying writing jobs. I’ll stick to the professional writing jobs as much as possible. Writing is a valuable skill and should be paid accordingly. To employers who view writers as a cheap commodity, you get what you pay for. Email me with your thoughts on the site. Feel free to add my link to your blog or site. |

Writing & journalism jobs - Canada |
|
| The first place print & other journalists go to look for a job or at least keep an eye on what's happening out there. I think every print journalist in Canada probably checks this site out on a regular basis. | |
| Lots of good jobs on here for media types. Some jobs here don't end up on Gaulin. Check them both to make sure you have your bases covered. Sometimes they will keep the jobs on here even after they've closed, which is nice for reference purposes. | |
| Craigslist Vancouver - writing/editing jobs. You will find all sorts of interesting jobs you won't find in the mainstream sites. You do have to be careful though. I have run into questionable & scam listings. Telecommuting jobs aren't always easy to find and are often "work-at-home" scams. | |
| Craigslist Vancouver - writing gigs. A little more unusual stuff here. For other writing listings, make sure to check out the other categories in Craigslist. Tech or financial writing jobs will not always appear here. | |
| Craigslist Edmonton - writing/editing jobs. Some good stuff once in a while. Check it often because it seems Craigslist here clears the jobs more often while Vancouver leaves them on longer. | |
| Craigslist Edmonton - writing gigs. There's not always a lot here, but I do like to keep an eye on it. Edmonton has a lot of opportunities for writers, partly as a result of being Alberta's capital. It's the main supply centre for Fort MacMurray, the centre of Alberta's heavy oil industry. | |
| Inkygirl pulls in writing jobs from all over, and often from Craigslist. Many are telecommuting writing jobs, which is nice, because you don't have to be at the office to write! | |
General job sites - Canada |
|
| Monster.ca has a lot of jobs. It's generally a fairly good site, with a real emphasis on tech and office jobs. The downside is a lot of the stuff is posted by recruiters. The jobs are often reposted by recruiters, so keep an eye out for that. If you're looking for an accounting job, something I've been checking out again, I've noticed something interesting about the accounting job breakdown between Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton. Vancouver has double the accounting jobs in Calgary and Calgary has double the accounting jobs in Edmonton. What that means, I'm not sure. Just more jobs in Calgary and Vancouver, or more stable in Edmonton? | |
| The HRDC job bank is okay, but it misses a lot of the jobs out there. It is often quite good for jobs from small, local companies. | |
| Arguably better than the HRDC job bank for B.C. jobs is the BCjobnetwork site from Black Press. They seem to have the local employers using it heavily, and there are many jobs I've seen in here I haven't even seen in the paper. | |
| Part of any job search is casting a wide net. BCjobs.ca has some jobs outside of the Lower Mainland, but Vancouver and Victoria are the main locations. | |
| Workopolis has some interesting features, such as telling you which jobs you've actually looked at. It suffers from the same problem that Monster.ca does and that's too many recruiters. The jobs are often reposted by recruiters. | |
| Career Builder is not bad, but it's mainly focused on jobs in the major metropolitan areas. There are jobs that do crop up outside of Toronto and Vancouver here though. | |
| Yahoo Hot Jobs suffers from the same problem so many job sites do, and that's the focus on major metropolitan areas. If you're looking there, no problem. | |
| Craigslist is a good place to look for unusual and temp jobs. You do have to be careful though because there are scammers that do post. It is policed somewhat by people reviewing the postings. The downside of Craigslist is the urban focus. | |
| BC Chamber Jobstore has some decent local listings and is worth checking out. There are some different listings here. | |
| Spectrum job search is kind of a catch-all with some good links. Make sure to explore the links for the province you're interested in. Probably one of the best collections I've seen for a Canadian site. | |
| Looking for a job in Banff or Jasper? This is the site for you! It's a little slow, so don't be too impatient. If I wanted to work there, this is the site I would go to first. | |
| This is Canwest Global's classified job searching site. This site is not bad for searching local jobs and they have some interesting stuff I haven't seen in other places. It is also good for the metropolitan areas. | |
| Claims to be Canada's oldest and most unique career and recruitment site since 1997. What would Canada's least unique career and recruitment site be? Here? Anyway, there are lots of jobs here. Lots of recruiters. Mainly metropolitan. | |
Writing & journalism jobs - U.S. |
|
| Media Bistro - various types of communications and writing jobs in the U.S. | |
| This site offers various links to journalism jobs, much as I am doing here. | |
| A variety of different journalism jobs, mainly based in the U.S. | |
| This site has quite a few different jobs in the communications field and is easily searched. I like it. There is also a listing for freelance jobs which also indicates whether telecommuting is acceptable. | |
| This site is aimed mainly towards women and minorities. To be able to search the job listings, you must submit a resume and you'll get a 60-day password. | |
| SunOasis has a variety of jobs mainly focusing on freelancing, editing and copywriting. If you search the site, you'll find links to international jobs as well. Lots of interesting stuff here. | |
| This is the way they put it: Writejobs.com provides job listings, career resources and information for journalism, media and publishing professionals. Seems to capture it well. Make sure to check out their links. | |
| This site searches other sites on the web for the particular category you're interested in. Seems to be focused on the U.S. and a search of writer, as well as reporter, brought up a lot of jobs. | |
| You mean I could get paid to blog? No way! This is one source of blog/jobs you can get. Let me know if you find more. I'd love to be able to get paid to blog. The key is to be a specialist on a certain topic. | |

| Ready for a move to the corner office? How about a bunch of good information on finding a job? There's a lot here for any job seeker no matter what level you're at. | |
| This office and website is often the first stop for newly unemployed Canadians. There is a ton of good information here, so make sure you check out the links. It's also nice that you can file all your reports and see your EI information online. One word of warning: make sure to use Internet Explorer. You can't gain access from here using Firefox. They recently made a bunch of changes. | |
