Alain's news

Dec 11/07

It has been a while since the last site update, and it's about time I made some changes. There will be some major, interesting changes to this site in the next while, so keep coming back to see what's happening.

Interest in my journalism job search page has been growing, particularly in Canada. I've found that people searching for writing jobs as well as journalism jobs have been finding their way to this page. I'd really like to find more sources for international and American journalism and writing jobs.

In Canada, I have noticed a real emphasis on jobs in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. There is some interest in jobs from Toronto, and virtually no interest in jobs in other major centres such as Saskatoon, Regina or Winnipeg. Victoria is occasionally searched for, at least in searches that come to my site.

Telecommuting has been a popular search. Who wouldn't like a job like that? I've been doing a bit of it myself lately.

Aug 24/06

Made a few minor changes to my journalism job search page and also added a link to a job board on Problogger. You could actually get a job blogging. Cool! If you know of any other sites that might be worth listing on my job search page, please email me. I'm also interested in any resources you may have run across about how to make money blogging.

I am still looking for a job and to make my job search a little easier, I designed a page to keep my search organized. You're welcome to use it too. It's mainly geared towards writing jobs, but I've included the major job search sites as well.

Check out my job search page.

Back in July I reserved the URL www.cdnnews.ca. It's surprising the URLs you'll find if you look! I figured I'd hold on to that URL for a little while. I have some plans for it! Not sure when I'll roll them out. There's virtually nothing on the site now.

May 24/06

I've decided to make some major revisions to my site. The colours got an overhaul as well as the graphics, so I think things will look a lot better. I haven't switched over to a CSS site yet, but that is the plan for the future.

You'll also see a few different things on my site now. I've am doing a little bit of advertising. I had done some in the past with Google, but the ads sucked. These ones are good. I use Bravenet for my counters, and they're Canadian. No problems with their services. I've been very happy with them, as I have with Doteasy. I use Doteasy for my hosting and have had no problems. If you want a $0 site with no ads, this is the way to go. Also, it might seem like an odd one, but I have an ad for straw bale building. I've wanted to build a straw bale house for a while and will eventually do it. If you're interested in a unique, energy efficient house, this is the way to go. I've even added a weather box down on the right.

I've been keeping busy working on my site, doing a ton of research and looking for a job! A lot of the research I've been doing involves how I might be able to market my websites and maybe even make money from them! The technical aspects of trying to get your sites to come up at the top of web searches is interesting. Surprisingly, this site and my blog tend to rank highly already. The research I did before I built this site originally has definitely paid off. I still have a lot to learn, but it's moving along.

When I haven't been cooped up inside, I've been working on a couple of my new blogs. But, how could I work on a new blog, but not inside? Well, with my new Canon 30D digital SLR I've been out taking photos and honing my photography skills. It is a great camera! One of my blogs is called Train Graffiti. I have long been interested in graffiti, and particularly the graffiti on trains. Now, with my new camera, I can take photos of the artistically enhanced cars that pass by the area where I live.

My other new blog, Alain's bookshelf, I haven't really done much with yet. The concept of the site is to do book reviews of new and old books. I like to talk about the books I've read or am in the process of reading and actually plan to do something with this site. The idea I have for it right now is to experiment with the template. I managed to find a nice three-column Blogger template. Before I commit to changing my main blog, I will experiment on this one..

The Journalism students at T.R.U. were worried about losing touch, so I set up a Yahoo group for current and former TRU/UCC Journalism students. We all get hooked on the j-list emails. Please join the list if you were or are a TRU Journalism student. We'd all like to know what you're up to. A side benefit is that Alan Bass, the chair of the Journalism program, has offered to let us know about jobs that come up from time to time.

About Me

I graduated from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops in April 2005 with a Bachelor of Journalism and a major in public relations.

Interested in reading some of my articles? I've got a number of my photos and articles here, and will be adding more of my recent ones soon. I did a lot of writing at the Williams Lake Tribune and Quesnel Cariboo Observer.

Check out my resume for details on my professional experience.
